Jackson has gotten so interesting lately. He’s starting to figure out his place in this world and I get the unique pleasure of observing and by default, experiencing his joy and awe. Toys are no longer just for chewing on nor are they simply projectile items. He looks and plays with his toys so differently now. It’s as if he realizes they are the supporting characters in the movie of his life. Characters that need love and attention…and open mouthed besitos, of course (little kisses.)
When JackJack was itty bitty, someone told us that we should enjoy the time with our newborn because “it only gets harder when they start walking.” Nevermind how insensitive it was giving such disheartening advice to new (sleep deprived) parents but I, quite frankly, think they were full of it. Toddlers are hilarious. Jackson will, out of nowhere, do this funny little Happy Feet dance. He just stands there stomping his feet with the biggest smile you’ve ever seen on a little boy. Stomping and smiling, who knows where he got it from. Maybe his soul been filled to the brim with such happiness that it has to come out somewhere.
I often miss the days of sweet smelling, chubby, giggling Jackson (just look at my last post if you need proof) but these days of toddlerhood are by far easier for me, as a mother. Sure, there are moments when my patience is severely tried (who the heck decided that molars had to push through your gums?!) but on the whole, we’re having so much more fun now. Running, laughing, exploring. It makes me excited about being able to experience this world all over again with him.
So, for all those new moms out there, who come upon someone saying “it only gets harder,” just smile politely and flip them the finger. From my limited experiences, every stage simply is what it is. Perhaps easier because of your new found comfort with your new role in this world. Easier because you become more acquainted with the mother within you, your child becomes the independent being he was destined to be and your world begins to look like everything you hoped it would be. You will experience such love and happiness that you too will have happy feet.
