Start of a Stash

A woman asked me when I was due yesterday at my yoga class and it really freaked me out that I could say “possibly the end of next month.”

Next month?! Are you serious? This is just crazy.

So yeah, I am officially in full on diaper making mode. We were lucky enough to receive a couple dozen of prefolds (what I’m planning on using most of the time) and I think I’ve got the hang of covers (thanks to the Darling Diapers Unlimited pattern and instructions)but I’d love to have some fitteds and some AIO available just in case they work better with Jackson.

Add in some wipes, doublers and the daily Gerbera orders I have to get out and you can see why my sewing machine and I will be joined at the hip for the next few weeks.

My mother keeps asking my why I didn’t just buy all my cloth diapers. Would have been a ton easier but then I won’t be able to customize future diapers for the best fit and you’ve got to admit, there’s something super cool about making things that generations of women have made before me. Plus, a lot of my wool covers and fitteds will be made using recycled material.

Walking in the footsteps of my grandmothers and saving the planet while doing it…definitely kickass.

These are great with their own snazzy plastic cover. When my three were young, diapers were huge rectangles of cotton or flannelette that I folded into shape…and baggy plastic pants to go over them.

Hee, yes! These two will probably work just fine, but when they get wet on the inside, you’ll need to wash them rather than just air them out between uses. The covers work better when the shiny side faces toward baby ;o)

Wouldn’t the outside act like the old rubber pants used to? I can’t imagine having the rubber side against the baby’s skin. And…the wetness would run right out through the leg openings.

The diaper blocks the waterproof side from being on baby’s skin, and it isn’t rubber, it’s not at all like those icky plastic pants I wore as a kid! Much more comfortable. Though some people do like to line it though with some microfleece or other NON-COTTON fabric so it’s softer. Some people will also double up on the PUL, sandwiching the waterproofing inside so it’s hidden.
